PHILIPS ARENA NOMINATED FOR "ARENA OF THE YEAR"
17th ANNUAL POLLSTAR CONCERT INDUSTRY AWARDS
ATLANTA, December 14, 2005 -- Philips Arena is among the nominees for 'Arena of the Year' in Pollstar magazine's annual concert industry awards. The venue is one of eight up for the award, which will be announced at the 17th Annual Pollstar Concert Industry Awards show, hosted by comedian Lewis Black, February 15, 2006 at the Theatre at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.
"We are honored that the music industry recognizes what both artists and our audiences have, that Philips Arena is a special place for concerts," said Philips Arena President Bob Williams. "The acoustics at Philips Arena are unparalleled, as is our passion for delivering exemplary client and customer service."
This year's recognition marks Philips Arena's first nomination in the 'Arena of the Year' category. Other nominees include Madison Square Garden, Staples Center, American Airlines Arena and the Wachovia Center. Awards will be handed out in 33 different categories including 'Major Tour of the Year,' 'Best New Touring Artist,' 'Booking Agency of the Year' and more. Nominations are submitted by various industry professionals, such as tour managers and promoters. Criteria include the number of concerts, concert grosses, percentage of sellouts, attendance, venue design, acoustics, etc. Philips Arena was nominated for Pollstar's 'Best New Major Concert Venue' award in 2000.
Philips Arena has consistently ranked among the top-10 concert and event arenas in North America since opening in 1999, finishing fourth in the 2004 Billboard magazine rankings for gross ticket sales. Also in 2004, the venue was named a 'Prime Site' by Facilities Magazine, an honor awarded by industry peers.
